How to Prepare for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session with Twins

If you have, or are going to have newborn twins, you have twice the amount of things to consider, including for newborn photography. You may wonder what you need to do to prepare, or how photographing twins is different. In all honestly, it's mostly just the same as a singleton session in lifestyle newborn photography. Here are some of my top tips for preparing for your session with twins:

  1. Dress them Differently- I know it can be tempting to match your twins, and you totally can for a few pictures, but in my experience, you'll want to have them in different outfits. That is especially true if they are identical. You may be able to tell them apart in an instant now, but 15 years from now, those memories may not be as sharp. Having baby #1 in gray, photographed in their crib, and then baby #2 photographed with something with their name or identifying them will go a long way. In this case, the twins were fraternal and did not look alike, but their dads chose to dress them differently to have a more 'coordinated' than 'matched' look.

  2. Stay True to You- It may be temping to dress your girl/boy twins in bright pink and blue, but keeping it classic. neutral and true to you is always my recommendation. It's my recommendation for single babies as well, but it especially applies here. Many of my families have pink or blue for their fraternal twins, think they need to go that way, but it doesn't actually fit their personalities. Don't feel pressure to have matching stuffed animals or gendered outfits because you've seen it done before if that doesn't fit your style.

  3. Get Pictures Alone and Together- When you have twice the number of babies, you don't have twice the number of pictures, but there are more to take. Make sure you are prepared to take photos of each child with each parent, each child separately, and then them together in all of the configurations as well. You are all a new family unit, but you are going to have a special bond with each of your kids and you want to celebrate that as well. Setting the expectation that your session is going to go a little longer will help relax you day-of.
